Theme Thoughts

Thanks to everyone who posted nice comments about, emailed regarding, and downloaded Museum in the last couple days. I really do appreciate it, and it’s amazing to see the theme in the wild. As far as themes go, it’s not without it’s limitations but hopefully over time and with your help it can be improved.

A few things come to mind.

Search

First of all, I forgot to mention on the theme page that the search is the excellent Tumblr Search by Jacob DeHart. If possible, you should download his .js file and serve it locally. Everything you need is located in the .js file, so hack away.

Morelink

Someone had asked if the morelink and tag trigger would cause any problems should Tumblr decide to introduce true post tagging. I don’t foresee any problems. The morelink is triggered by the class- ‘more’. Using tags as classes is exactly what TagsAsClasses is for, so I can’t imagine any problems. The worst that happens is having a bunch of posts tagged ‘more’.

Video Resizing

Initially I used some cheap CSS to try and display 250px videos on index pages, and 500px vids on permalink pages. It only sorta worked, and caused Vimeo video to not show up at all. Not good. I don’t have an answer right now, but if anyone has any good ideas let me know. It’s easy to forget how much heavy lifting Tumblr does for video posts. You can paste all kinds of funky shit into a video post and Tumblr will digest it and spit out correctly sized videos. Unfortunately you can’t just resize those with CSS and expect consistent results.

While there might be an easy fix, the best solution would be the ablility to define Tumblr index and permalink templates separately. I doubt this is in the works, but differentiating index/permalink content would be very powerful.

Mods

topherchris had a good idea about theme mods which got me thinking about extending Museum. I included the CustomCSS tag in the Museum theme so that small mods could be dropped in to change its look. While I was initially planning a centered mod and a white mod, if anyone has any CSS or ideas they’d like to contribute please email me or leave a comment. The centered mod is on the theme page and I’ve posted a screenshot as well.
